Trauma Informed Therapies

Trauma comes in all shapes and sizes, and so does trauma treatment. Most of us are familiar with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the context of war veterans. While many of our war veterans do return home with PTSD, you don’t have to have been to war or be a veteran to have PTSD. Some of us may be able to pinpoint an exact event that caused our trauma. Others of us aren’t sure – maybe because what was happening seemed normal in our environment. Or maybe someone around us invalidated our reaction. Or maybe we don’t recall what happened at all but something doesn’t feel right. Regardless of how you get there, I have some tools that may be of assistance.

My approach to addressing trauma is informed by various treatment modalities including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. I believe that before we start digging, it’s important that we establish rapport, you have a sense of safety, and you start learning to trust yourself. DBT is your friend in establishing safety! IFS can help you build trust! EMDR can be a really effective tool for some folks, and we can work together to figure out if it’s for you.
